Light As A Medium - Sensory Experience
For this upcoming project I am hoping to capture the sensation/ emotion of innocence and wonder. I am generally interested in exploring the intersection of the natural and technological worlds, and this assignment feels like an apt opportunity to explore this further.
What I am imagining is an interactive piece that generates this feeling not just through how it looks but also through the interaction itself. Taking inspiration from disparate places like the forests in the film Princess Mononoke and the work “Stone Circle” by Haroon Mirza, what I plan to create is a softball sized, standalone, rock-looking structure. Despite looking totally natural, from underneath there will be shining a subtle, pulsating, almost life-like glow. My intention is to create the sense that there is something magical or otherworldly about this seemingly ordinary object. However, if one were to pick it up, the light will turn off and the object will return to a plain, unadorned state. In this way, the allure and mystery of what it is exactly that is causing the mysterious glow will never be revealed, capturing forever that feeling of curiosity and wonder.
